Brendon Hartley cannot catch a break in his first full season of Formula 1, this time the hapless Toro Roso driver was the victim of a suspension failure on his Toro Rosso which resulted in a huge crash during Saturday's final free practice session for the British Grand Prix.
It was a big one, jaws dropped at that moment, but it has to be said all the safety devices including the Halo, working together to protect the driver for what could have been a very serious injury.
Hat's off to the FIA and all involved in making this very dangerous sport so safe, this may well be a life that the Halo has saved or at least prevented the driver from injury.
The left-front suspension failure at 330 kph has to be investigated before the cars can be allowed to partake in qualifying, although the team did announce that Hartley's okay to drive "and has been cleared for qualifying by the medics" but time will tell if the team can repair the car in time for the afternoon session.
Teammate Pierre Gasly spent his FP3 session in the pits as the team worked on his car, when the incident beamed on the TV monitors it became clear that the Frenchman would not be released.
After checking on Hartley, Gasly told reporters, "I spoke to him. He's a bit shocked... but OK."
At the time of writing it is unclear if Hartley's car will be ready in time for qualifying in the afternoon.
