In the aftermath of a contentious grand prix weekend in Austria followed by a stern dressing down from Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton has quoted Ayrton Senna as he insists he will always go for the gap on track.
Mercedes have rewritten the rules of engagement between their contact prone drivers, the exact nature of these rules have not been made public. However the team is allowing championship leader Nico Roberg and his arch-rival (and teammate) Hamilton to battle it out without team orders.
When Hamilton asked by reporters at Silverstone if he would repeat the Red Bull Ring last lap move in future, the Briton replied, "Absolutely. I'm always going to go for the gap. Like Ayrton would always say: If you don't go for the gap, you are no longer a racing driver. I will never stop being a racing driver."
Meanwhile on track Hamilton had a flawless day on home turf during the first day of free practice of the British Grand Prix weekend, while his teammate had to sit out FP2 due to a water leak on his Mercedes.
Hamilton summed up day one of action at Silverstone, "It’s been a great first day. Lots of positive steps forward with the balance of the car. It’s incredibly gusty out there, which is one of the awesome challenges of this circuit."
"Coming through Maggots and Becketts then down through Stowe, I was actually yelling in my helmet, it’s that exciting! What a great combination of corners – particularly when the wind is blowing in the right direction."
"If we can keep the car in that window we’ll be in a strong position," predicted Hamilton who trails Rosberg by 11 points in the title race.
