Esteban Gutierrez, remember him? Well, at his home grand prix in Mexico he surfaced again to reveal that he is targeting a seat in Formula 1 next year with Williams next year provided he has a hefty chequebook to fund a seat with the team in 2019.
Speaking to reporters at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez during the course of the race weekend, Gutierrez revealed, "I am working very hard, I've been preparing a lot this year, I am very motivated."
"I've been working with Mercedes, a very professional team, actively on the simulator, doing different things, and I am really positive about the future."
Williams have signed Goerge Russell for next season, but his teammate has yet to be determined with a long queue of drivers keen to get in on the top flight action even if the team is struggling at the wrong end of the grid.
Nevertheless, this does not deter the 27-year-old, "It is a great team. It is one of the most respected teams in Formula 1. I think they've had difficult years, but the people they have and the team they are I am pretty sure they can recover pretty well."
Gutierrez added, "I feel like I have a lot to give in Formula 1, and I am very motivated for it. I have chances, I am here. At the beginning of the year I was not involved with a Formula 1 team and now I am with Mercedes, which is at the moment one of the most important teams in Formula 1."
"I've been working very hard, it hasn't been easy, but I am really positive about the future. I think there is a lot to come in my career, and there is a lot I can give as well," added the Mexican who since he departed F1 at the end of 2016, has since tried his hand in Formula E and Indycar racing with little success.
Gutierrez made his F1 debut at the 2013 Australian Grand Prix for Sauber and 59 races later drove his final grand prix (for now) with Haas at the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
