Even if you’ve never played it before, it’s likely you’ve heard of poker. Thanks to the rise in online casinos, poker is being played by more people than ever before.

People of different demographics getting into the game – and even winning real money for playing it.
This report for our Formula 1 readers in responsible betting, is a beginner’s guide to playing online poker. From hand ranking to popular variants of the game, here are some of the things you need to know to get your poker journey started!

The basics

Poker is a strategic card game where players aim to create the best hand or bluff opponents into folding. Each player bets based on their hand strength, similar to how Formula 1 drivers assess their rivals while managing resources. Both arenas demand a keen understanding of competition and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Whether you’re playing online or at a land-based casino, poker is usually played alongside a dealer who hands out cards and other players make bets based on whose ‘hand’ (or combination of cards) they believe rank the highest.
These hands rank as follows:
1. Royal Flush: A Royal Flush or straight flush means that you have an ace, king, queen, jack and ten all in the same suit. It is the highest ranking and therefore most desirable hand to have.
2. Straight Flush: With a straight flush, you have a series of cards in a sequence that are all of the same suit.
3. Four of a kind: It’s what it says in the name: a four of a kind hand includes four cards all of the same rank of different suits, and one additional card. This hand is also known as ‘quads’.
4. Full house: You’ll have a full house if your hand reveals three of a kind of card alongside a pair.
5. Flush: Beneath four of a kind we’ve got the ‘flush’ which is five cards of the same suit although not in a sequence.
6. Straight: A straight is the fifth best hand to have and includes five cards in sequence, although not of the same suit.
7. Three of a kind: Three of a kind is a hand where you’ll have five cards of the same rank.
8. Two pair: Another more common hand to see is two pairs, which includes two different pairs of cards in the same hand.
9. Pair: In a pair, you’ll have just one pair of the same cards within your hand.
10. High card: Finally, if you don’t have any of the hands, the card that’s the highest is the one you’ll play.

Different poker variants

Now that we have some of the basics understood in terms of hands, it’s worth exploring different poker variants – as there’s quite a few!
Many of these variations actually go all the way back to the mid-1800s when people began playing poker in the United States. Here are some of the most popular ones you’ll come across when you first start playing poker:

Texas Hold’Em

We’ll start with one of the top variations: Texas Hold’Em. It’s also a type of poker that’s been shown on television the most and is easy to learn and get better at. There’s also an incredible amount of resources online that can help you improve your skills, although the downside to this is that other players can access them too.
One of the things that separates Texas Hold’Em from other types of poker is that it’s a community card poker game, which means that the players receive a set number of ‘hole cards’, and Community cards are placed in the middle of the table. These cards are accessible to all to make hands. Texas Hold’Em is a good game to get started with if you’re new as it is so popular and relatively easy to get better at.

Omaha Hi

The second most popular type of poker is OmahaHi. This game is played as you would Texas Hold’Em, with the difference being that 4 hole cards are dealt instead of 2 to each player. It’s another game that’s easy to learn, especially if you’re already familiar with how Texas Hold’em works.

7-Card Stud

Another variation we had to include on this list is 7 Card Stud. Before Texas Hold’Em became so popular, Stud poker was the one you’d likely be playing. Unlike other variations, every player in Stud receives their own hand.
While there are quite a few variations including 5-Card draw, 5-Card Omaha, Badugi and more, it’s worth trying out these top three versions first to get the most of your poker playing experience as a beginner!

How to choose the right platform

These days, there’s so many online platforms you can choose from when it comes to playing poker. It’s always worth taking time to look at reviews from other players, explore the security features and make note of game options.
When in doubt, it’s best to go with an online platform you’ve heard of before as there’s likely a reason why they’ve gained a reputation!
