Formula 1 confirmed today that a new agreement with race promotors of the Belgian Grand Prix has been reached, as Spa Francorchamps will feature on the 2023 calendar.
The fate of the historic track has been subject of debate in the past few weeks, with it contract with F1 expiring this year, and with the sport looking around for new venues and with the limited number of slots on the calendar, their was some worry that older classic venues might have to make way for newer ones that simply can pay more.
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has previously insisted that traditional race have "full respect" and revealed that their would be talks with the promotors of the Belgian Grand Prix over the course of this weekend.
Formula 1 said in a statement: "Formula 1 can confirm that the Belgian Grand Prix will be on the 2023 calendar following an agreement to extend our partnership together.
"Further details on the 2023 calendar will be announced in due course," the statement added.
While no details have been mentioned in the statement regarding the length of the contract, it is good to see that the sport will race next year at one of it most iconic tracks.
The track at Spa Francorchamps has undergone some renovation ahead of this year's race with work done on run-off areas especially at Eau Rouge as well as new surfacing applied in some areas.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said on twitter: "I am very pleased that the BelgianGP will be on the calendar proposed to the World Motor Sport Council by FOM for 2023. Spa-Francorchamps is an iconic circuit and a special place for F1."
