As the 2023 Formula 1 season began in Bahrain at the beginning of March, there were three news names on the grid and, as many newcomers have discovered over the years, it can be extremely difficult.
Making the leap can often take several seasons for drivers to acclimatise to racing at the top level. Logan Sargeant has found out the hard way this season and
has been criticised for producing three consecutive last-place finishes in his first season of Formula 1.
He has been joined this season by fellow Formula 1 rookies Oscar Piastri as well as Nyck De Vries and although they undoubtedly have a bright future in the sport, the betting suggests that this inexperienced trio are unlikely to be challenging for a podium finish anytime soon.
Nevertheless, every driver has to earn their stripes and even the likes of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen, who are always amongst the race favourites with the majority of the
betting sites in the UK, had their fair share of knockbacks along the way.
Although Sargeant, De Vries and Piastri are still adapting to the rigours of F1, there are a number of promising drivers who are queuing up behind them and hoping to follow a similar path. We’ve picked out three potential Grand Prix stars who could be in Formula 1 in the future.
Enzo Fittipaldi
Brazil has produced its fair share of successful drivers with Ayrton Senna, Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello each having creating lasting legacies in Formula 1. Enzo Fittipaldi is the latest South American hoping to make a name for himself in the sport with the Miami-born 21-year old also hoping to follow his Grandfather’s footsteps.
As the grandson of a two-time Formula 1 world championship-winning driver, Fittipaldi comes from excellent stock and has been earning multiple podium finishes in F2 across the last two seasons.
His performances saw him signed up to the Red Bull programme as
a junior driver and although he is unlikely to be challenging for a place on the F1 starting grid anytime soon, his recent progress and ability to bounce back from medical setbacks suggests that he has the determination to succeed at the top level.
Theo Pourchaire
Theo Pourchaire is one of a number of promising French drivers who have shown plenty of potential over the last few seasons. The Grasse-born 19-year old has been competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship for ART and is also a member of the Sauber Academy and their Formula 1 programme.
He finished second behind the hugely talented Felipe Drugovich in last season’s Championship accumulating 164 points along the way. He managed seven podium finishes and was victorious on three occasions despite suffering some misfortune en-route when his car hit a bird and he was forced to retire from the race.
Oliver Bearman
Also hovering on the verges of Formula 1, Pourchaire has managed to belie his tender years this season, at just 18 years of age, Bearman certainly has time on his side to work his way to the top. The Brit has shown great composure and maturity when he became the first driver to clinch both the German and Italian F4 titles in a single year.
Having moved up to F3, he’s adapted quickly and has proven his ability to cope with new scenarios and environments. He began with two second-place finishes at Brands Hatch before returning from his break to win at Norfolk’s Snetterton Circuit.
He became the second youngest winner of an F2 race after the aforementioned Theo Pourchaire when he capitalised on a mistake from team-mate Frederik Vesti.
With ample time on his side, this young Brit will surely feature in Formula 1 in the future.
