Formula 1 considers post-Abu Dhabi test rookie F1 sprint race

Heads of the F1 Commission and team managers have been discussing how to give young rookie and new drivers more track time as part of the discussion that started at the Commission's most recent meeting.

Experienced drivers believe new drivers aren't as ready as they were. The idea of allowing rookie wildcard entries to F1 races was rejected due to issues regarding car entries, as there is no option to enable third cars.

It was also considered illogical to replace existing star drivers with fairly unknown young ones. As the public got wind of the idea, it received mixed reactions from fans including Winz.io casino bonus hunters.

Although they do not want to replace their renowned drivers, F1 does plan to give rookies more practice time and a postseason sprint race. The plan is for a short race with rookie drivers to happen after the one-day test in Abu Dhabi, after the last race of the F1 season in December 2024.

Teams are required to operate two vehicles in the Abu Dhabi test to comply with the current regulations. The present driver is in charge of tyre testing of the rubber for the coming year.

On the other hand, one of the cars is reserved for new drivers or rookies who haven't raced in more than two Grands Prix. Since the proposal requires a revision of current sports regulations, sporting directors must evaluate its efficacy and potential impact on the legal structure.

They must finalise a decision ahead of the F1 Commission meeting in September 2024 to avoid any issues. Stefano Domenicali, CEO of F1, said that he thought the idea would help young drivers grow.

‘There is a project on the table, namely the prospect of organising a sprint race for young drivers in Abu Dhabi. We are reflecting on how to give young people the chance during the Yas Marina test to shine and gain experience – not only by driving in the test but also in a competitive context’, he said.

Meanwhile on the current 2024 F1 world title fight, Mercedes executive, Toto Wolff, warned that The F1 championship is now wide open after McLaren ‘annihilated’ the entire grid in the Dutch Grand Prix and might've done the same at the Italian Grand Prix. McLaren made a statement when F1 came back to Zandvoort with Lando Norris winning by a huge 22 seconds over Max Verstappen. Monza was a slip-up.

Since the MCL38's upgrades in Miami made it a reliable race winner, the Woking-based outfit has persisted in reducing Red Bull's points advantage. The margin between Norris and Red Bull shrank to 30 points due to Norris's crushing loss, which was in part caused by the car's further alterations.

Wolff says that the current unbroken record of Red Bull under F1's rules is now in jeopardy. ‘McLaren has proven in the past, since Austria last year, that they brought upgrades to the car that landed spot on’, he said.

‘And that was just very impressive to see today. He’s annihilated all of the competition, with the fastest lap at the end on a 42-lap old Hard. Twenty seconds in the gap. I think this championship, the Constructors’ Championship, is wide open in my opinion and it’s good for Formula 1’, Wolff added.
