Following a longer-than-normal autumn break, Formula 1 roars back to life this weekend at the iconic Circuit of the Americas (COTA) for the 19th round of the 2024 World Championship season.

As part of the season's intense conclusion, the United States Grand Prix at COTA marks the first event of an America triple-header, where Ferrari aims to close the gap to their rivals in the fight for crucial championship points. Ferrari’s Team Principal Fred Vasseur outlined the challenges awaiting the team in Austin.
The Frenchman emphasised the pivotal role that preparation will play over the busy final stretch of the season. Speaking ahead of the weekend, Vasseur highlighted how the high-speed, technical demands of the COTA circuit will provide a critical test for Ferrari’s upgrades introduced in recent races.
Vasseur said in the Ferrari preview of COTA: “The Grand Prix in Austin marks the start of a very busy end to the season, with six races in the space of eight weeks, split into two triple-headers. Since Singapore, we have been working flat out and the high-speed turns at this track will provide a useful test for the upgrades we introduced at previous races.”

Sprint Weekend Demands Strategic Focus

The United States Grand Prix is not just any race weekend, as it features the Sprint format, meaning teams only get a single hour of free practice before diving straight into the competitive sessions. Vasseur underscored how this increases the importance of detailed preparation before the event, as there will be little room for adjustments once the on-track action begins.
Vasseur explained: “As is always the case at a Sprint weekend, the work carried out at the factory prior to the event takes on greater importance. With only one hour of free practice before immediately going into the competitive part of the event, with qualifying for Saturday’s 100-kilometer race, we have to be on top of our game.”
The Sprint weekend format forces teams to balance the need for immediate speed and tyre management while also gathering data for Sunday’s main event. With championship standings still tight, every session counts, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be looking to maximize every opportunity to challenge for a podium finish.
COTA’s 5.513-kilometer layout is one of the most complex and thrilling circuits on the F1 calendar, offering a blend of high-speed, medium, and low-speed corners, along with significant elevation changes. Drivers must contend with two DRS zones, providing prime overtaking opportunities, including the famous uphill run to the iconic Turn 1.

COTA: A Track Full of Opportunities and Challenges

Vasseur noted that this circuit’s characteristics are particularly important for Ferrari to test their latest upgrades: “Charles and Carlos and the whole team are well prepared and keen to go racing again, as always, looking to get every last bit of performance out of our package.
"We have to be on top of our game, as the leading teams are very evenly matched, and there is still everything to play for in the championship,” Vasseur emphasized.
The first sector of COTA, with its high-speed corners resembling those at Suzuka and Silverstone, will push both the cars and drivers to their limits. The long straight between turns 11 and 12 provides another overtaking opportunity, where Ferrari will need to fine-tune their DRS performance to stay competitive against their rivals.
As is often the case in Texas, weather conditions could play a major role. Temperatures at COTA frequently soar into the 40-degree Celsius range, putting immense strain on the cars’ engines and tires. This adds complexity to race strategy, as tire degradation is typically high at this circuit, forcing teams to carefully manage their pace throughout the Grand Prix.

Ferrari write in the preview: “COTA is known for being a high tire degradation track, which means drivers have to make compromises in terms of their driving style,” the Ferrari team stated in a briefing. “If you push too hard at the start, you might have to make an extra tire stop towards the end of the race.”
In 2023, most teams opted for a three-stop strategy, and similar tactics may be required this year. Ferrari will likely look to manage their tire wear during Saturday’s Sprint race to gather valuable data for Sunday’s Grand Prix, where the team hopes to challenge for top positions.
With only a handful of races left in the season, Ferrari remains focused on extracting the maximum performance from their car and drivers in the final push. Vasseur’s confidence in the team’s preparation and upgrades reflects the determination within the Scuderia to close the season on a high note, starting with this weekend’s United States Grand Prix.
“The leading teams are very evenly matched, and there is still everything to play for in the championship,” Vasseur concluded, making clear that Ferrari’s ambition is far from over as they head into the crucial final phase of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
