Apart from McLaren, the 2025 Formula 1 season has been a bit of a Constructor roller coaster ride for the rest of the field.
Mercedes started out strongly but then tailed off towards the summer break, with suggestions they had turned down another design cul-de-sac. But upgrades that perform are not their only problem.
Max Factor
Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolff, in the swimming vernacular, has been treading water for some time now over which of his two drivers stays or goes in 2026.
The promise of a Max Verstappen defection from Milton Keynes proved too much for the veteran F1 player to ignore. The ousting of Christian Horner by Team
Verstappen seems to have firmly closed the door on that possibility.
However, while “Max in a Mercedes” was still an ephemeral dream, the incumbent drivers were effectively cut loose, especially star performer, George Russell.
The sound of backpedaling
Now that the four-time F1 World Champion has declared his hand and will be staying with Red Bull Racing, Wolff has some awkward negotiations.
Kimi Antonelli was his great “new Max” hope. However, you feel the honeymoon period is coming to an end. Wolff was relatively
brutal about his protégé after Monza, saying his performance was “underwhelming”. He then followed up with what can only be described as faint praise and effective confirmation that he’s staying.
In F1 parlance, this can be translated into a clear message - don’t ask for more money and be grateful for your seat.
Inaction speaks louder than words
Meanwhile, there is still no confirmation on George’s future in the team. With the new reality now set in, Parc Ferme expected that the deal would have been quickly closed. Russell comfortably sits in the top five drivers of the current F1 grid and is now, technically, the only one available.
We can only speculate that he is holding out for a better deal and deservedly so. He’s been left in no doubt where Toto’s preferences lie. However, he has consistently kept the Mercedes flag flying loud and proud.
Win and win
It's difficult to believe that Max was ever going to join what he must consider to be the dark side. Parc Ferme prefers the narrative that he deliberately blindsided Toto while torturing his nemesis at the same time.
However, Russell demonstrated both loyalty and performance beyond what you would typically find in F1. Come on, Toto, put your hand in your exceedingly deep pocket and reward George appropriately for your misjudgement.
