Paul Velasco, editor in chief of GrandPrix247, and I usually spend hours discussing Formula 1 as part of our daily job of running the site.
But these long talks are not always about work, as they sometimes take a turn into general discussions about life and F1, which is always interesting, as Paul comes from a different time, which gives me a different perspective on life in and out of F1.
Mind you, these conversations can become really tense, as Paul and I couldn't be more different in our characters, which makes me wonder how we coexist within the same site... But we do, and we enjoy bringing the F1 content we daily come up with to our readers as a labor of our love for F1.
In one of those discussions, Velasco threw a question at me, which made me take off my editor's cap and deliver a personal answer.
That happened when we were talking about F1 drivers, and Paul wanted to know which of the current crop of drivers I really support.
No, I usually try and keep my personal feelings to myself as much as possible as I handle my
GrandPrix247 editor duties, but Paul insisted I share this with you.
The question came as we were talking about Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari, and as usual, the chat went down different paths.
Drivers from previous eras
Now I have always been a Michael Schumacher fan, a fanboy I have to admit, and that goes back to his early days at Ferrari when I started following F1.
After that, I became a fanboy of Sebastian Vettel, and that was not because he was winning everything at Red Bull. The Vettel I preferred was the one who was at Ferrari, where he developed as a person, an F1 statesman, so to say, despite the tough time he had in Red before his unfortunate dismissal.
And by fanboy, I mean both Michael and Seb could do no wrong in my opinion, and would be ready to defend their actions no matter what they were, and let's be honest, they've done some questionable sh!t over the course of their careers.
Now going to drivers of the past era, I have always had this admiration of Senna, although I wasn't fortunate to watch him race. So I built my perception about him from what I watched, read, and from what Paul shared with me... Had Senna lived on, I would have probably become a fanboy...
And then there was Niki Lauda, and what a character that man was. His story is extraordinary, how he survived and came back from his crash. I was fortunate to witness him, albeit not as a driver, but the respect for him even grew.
Niki was champion in the year I was born, 1984
Alain Prost, on the other hand, had only gained my respect as a driver, but I do not like him. I may be basing my judgment on the documentaries I've watched about his rivalry with Senna.
But there was a moment, after his crash with the Brazilian in Japan in 1989, when the latter went on to win the race. The Frenchman, however, went directly to the stewards and made sure they disqualified Senna. The footage I watched of Prost walking to the stewards and the look on his face and his demeanor afterward was behind my judgment on the Professor.
But then Paul pushed me to the current generation of drivers and admitted that Carlos Sainz is the driver I support these days. I believe he is so underrated, and it was not fair for him to end up at Williams... Sorry, James Vowles.
However, I am far from being the Spaniard's fanboy, as to be honest, I do not feel that current drivers have the characters that warrant that.
Which brings me to Max Verstappen. I like the guy and his character, while his driving abilities are beyond discussion naturally, but when he messes up, I do not defend him, a necessary condition of being a fanboy.
As for Lewis, well, I have the utmost respect for what he has achieved, and I like him, not as much as Max; maybe it's the outfits.
But now I am faced with a dilemma, as he is now a Ferrari driver, and I am a hopeless Tifoso... I want Sainz to make it with Williams, but Lewis drives for Ferrari... A tough one...
So here it is, my take on some F1 drivers of present and past... No time to cover all of them...
Editor's cap back on...
