Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone was never one to allow politics - good or bad - to get in the way of making a buck, and while justifying the sport's debut in Azerbaijan he has compared the former USSR country to America and declared that the latter is a sh!t hole.
Speaking to media on the eve of the European Grand Prix at the brand new Baku Street Circuit, he said, "We just left the greatest place in the world: North America. And compared to here, it is a bit of a shit hole, isn’t it?"
Ecclestone was answering reporters questions about the hosting of a grand prix in a country which has a dubious human rights record.
To which the sport's chief responded, "The minute people tell me what human rights are, you can look at how, why and when it applies. Does anyone know what human rights are?
"We listen obviously, and if people have got genuine complaints there is not a lot we can do because in all fairness, I don’t know, freedom of speech and things like that."
"I think you get into trouble in most countries if you are anti some government or political people. Or in fact anybody. So it is not quite as easy as that," explained Ecclestone.
