Liberty Media Corporation has announced the appointment of Derek Chang as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 February 2025 replacing Greg Maffei who stepped down in November last year
Chang, a seasoned executive with extensive experience across media, sports, and entertainment industries, has served as a director of Liberty Media since March 2021.
In a statement, Liberty Media Chairman John Malone expressed his confidence in Chang's leadership: “I am thrilled to welcome Derek as the CEO of Liberty Media. His expertise in operating and investment roles, combined with his deep understanding of our industries and Liberty’s history, makes him the ideal leader for Liberty’s next chapter. I have worked with Derek for over 25 years and am consistently impressed by his leadership style, breadth of expertise, and global perspective.”
Malone will serve as interim CEO until Chang takes on the role, joining the Executive Committee of Liberty Media’s Board alongside Malone, Vice Chairman Dob Bennett, and Chase Carey.
Reflecting on his new role, Chang highlighted Liberty Media’s focus on growth and innovation: “I have long admired Liberty’s track record of value creation for investors and partners."
Vision for Liberty Media
Chang added: "Our immediate priorities include optimizing the portfolio structure with the split-off of Liberty Live and supporting the growth of operating assets like Formula 1 and MotoGP. Looking ahead, Liberty will remain long-term-minded yet nimble in seizing new opportunities.”
Chang brings a wealth of experience to Liberty Media. Most recently, he served as Executive Chairman of EverPass Media, a platform he co-founded in partnership with the NFL and RedBird Capital Partners, designed to distribute premium sports content to commercial establishments. He will remain on the Board of EverPass Media but step down as Executive Chairman to focus on his new role.
From 2018 to 2020, Chang was CEO of NBA China, where he expanded the NBA’s presence in the region, overseeing operations across Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Hong Kong. Before that, he led international operations for Scripps Network Interactive and held key positions at DIRECTV, Charter Communications, and the YES Network.
Chang’s tenure at DIRECTV as EVP of Content Strategy and Development saw him manage content acquisition and production. At Charter Communications, he acted as EVP Finance & Strategy and Interim Co-CFO, spearheading corporate strategy and M&A activities.
Chang holds an MBA from Stanford University and a history degree from Yale University. His accolades include being named one of Cablefax Magazine’s “Top 100 Executives in Cable” and one of SportsBusiness Journal’s “50 Most Influential People in Sports Business.” He is a member of the Committee of 100, a Chinese-American leadership organisation, and serves on the Advisory Board of Row New York.
As Liberty Media prepares for its next phase, Chang’s leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in driving growth and innovation across its portfolio.
