Gilles Villeneuve — the Glory Days
Gilles Villeneuve spent five years behind a racecar wheel, mostly with Ferari, following a short stint with McLaren. Despite never winning an F1 title, he is regarded as one of Canada’s greatest drivers.
During his six-year tenure with Ferari, he managed to chalk up six Grand Prix wins. The year 1979 marked his most successful year during which he won three races and four second place podiums to came in second in the Driver’s Championship.
Sadly, in 1982, during his 68th F1 race at the Belgian Grand Prix, Villeneuve crashed and died on impact.
Jacques Villeneuve — The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree
Jacques Villeneuve was only 11 years old when his father passed away. However, his story might be the first one in which sons of F1 drivers followed in their fathers’ footsteps and made a name for themselves on the circuit.
Jacques Villeneuve had a memorable career in IndyCar, snatching the title in 1995 Indianapolis 500 and PPG Indy Car World Series before heading to Formula One in 1996. He inked a deal with Williams and a year later claimed his first and only title which had eluded his father, thus cementing his legacy in the sport.
To this day, no other Canadian has managed to replicate the success.
Is Canada’s F1 Future in Safe Hands?
Following Jacques Villeneuve’s retirement in 2006, Canada has not seen a lot of success in the sport. Still, the Canadian Grand Prix has remained one of the most watched Grand Prix in motorsport, and in fact claimed the title of the most watched race in F1 in 2005.
However, in 2017, the world of racing welcomed another bright star in its sky — Lance Stroll. Stroll started his career as an F4 driver before moving to F3 where he won the European Formula 3 Series.
His first race with Williams, team that’s always known how to recognise great Canadian racing talent, was at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he even managed to scoop some points, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Since 2021, Stroll has been driving for Aston Martin, working hard to etch his name in the list of eternal F1 champions.
