Ferrari have yet to take a decision on whether to retain Kimi Raikkonen for 2019 and when they do team chief Maurizio Arrivabene will make the call revealed Maranello's new chief executive Louis Camilleri during his first visit to the Formula 1 paddock since taking over at the helm of the sport's most famous team
“When we take that decision, and there is no timeframe, you will be the second to know,” Camilleri told reporters at Ferrari’s home Italian Grand Prix, a race where the team have often made announcements in the past.
“I know Kimi very well. He’s a dear friend, has been for a long time,” added Camilleri, who was appointed in July just days before the death of his predecessor Sergio Marchionne and was holding his first paddock news conference.
Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion who will be 39 in October, is out of contract at the end of the season and there is plenty of speculation about whether or not he will be kept on.
Sauber’s Ferrari-backed 20-year-old Charles Leclerc is seen as the likely successor.
“It’s a team decision. As Maurizio is our team principal, ultimately he’ll take the decision,” added Camille speaking to F1 reporters for the first time since taking over from deceased former Ferrari chief Sergio Marchionne.
