Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is reportedly looking at a possible move into top-level motorsport, including Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

According to reports citing Bloomberg, the company is studying different options as it tries to build a stronger global image. No final decision has been made yet, and BYD has not confirmed a direct plan to join Formula 1.
If the move happens, BYD could become one of the first major Chinese carmakers to make a serious push into modern F1. For the company, this would not only be about racing. It would also be a way to promote its technology and brand outside China.

Why Formula 1 May Interest BYD

Formula 1 has become more attractive to carmakers in recent years. The sport is moving further into hybrid technology, and this makes it more relevant for companies that work with batteries, electric motors and energy recovery systems.
From 2026, F1 cars will use new power units with a much bigger electrical share. Formula 1 says the goal is to increase the electrical part of the power output from 20% to about 50%.

Ford has returned through its partnership with Red Bull Powertrains. General Motors is also entering the championship through Cadillac.
Toyota has also increased its presence in the sport through a technical partnership with Haas. This does not make Toyota a factory F1 team, but it shows that more manufacturers want to be close to the championship again.
This wave of interest is not accidental. Formula 1 now offers carmakers a mix of global media reach, advanced hybrid technology and a younger fan base. For brands that want international recognition, the sport has become a powerful marketing tool.

BYD’s Move Is Still Uncertain

For now, BYD’s possible Formula 1 entry remains at an early stage. The company is reportedly exploring its options, but there is no confirmed team, no official programme and no clear timeline.
That is why the story should be treated as a signal of interest rather than a confirmed entry. BYD may choose Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, another racing series or no major motorsport project at all.
Still, the report is important. It shows that Formula 1’s shift toward hybrid power is not only attracting traditional carmakers. It is also catching the attention of electric vehicle giants that want to grow their global presence.
