McLaren's resurgence in Formula 1 this season has brought them a dilemma ahead of Round 18 of the 2024 F1 World Championship, Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix.
With two highly competitive drivers - Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri - McLaren finds itself in the unique position of being able to dictate team orders, something rarely seen since their dominant years.
Both drivers are in stellar form, with Norris edging closer to Max Verstappen in the
2024 F1 Drivers' Championship standings and Piastri securing a crucial win at the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
This success, however, comes with a complication. Piastri's rapid rise and proximity to Norris in points could pose a threat to McLaren's unity and their "Papaya Rules," designed to maintain harmony between the two.
As favourites to win Sunday's race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, McLaren may be faced with a difficult decision: what happens if Piastri is ahead of Norris?
Team orders, at times a necessary evil in Formula 1, have a reputation for damaging intra-team dynamics. The main concern is whether Piastri would be willing to relinquish his position for Norris, particularly when he has demonstrated that he is a legitimate race winner and potential championship contender himself.
Brundle: I think Oscar will help out when he needs to
Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle weighed in on the subject, saying: "I admire Lando's position to say he doesn't need help. It didn't bother Michael Schumacher or Fernando Alonso back in the day. But I think you have to be careful what you do to the other driver's head and their reputation."
Brundle's comments recall the long-lasting psychological toll team orders have had on drivers like Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa, who struggled to recover after being asked to move aside for teammates.
"I don't think Oscar will do that and I don't think the team will do that. They are measuring it race by race. Oscar will help out when he needs to, but he's not going to throw away points and certainly not victories," ventured Brundle.
Nico Rosberg, speaking to Sky Sports F1, echoed these concerns, highlighting the complication McLaren faces with the "Papaya Rules" as Piastri closes in on Norris in the standings.
Rosberg: It might be time now for Piastri to help Lando
The 2016 F1 World Champion said: "I was of the opinion after Monza when speaking to Zak Brown that Oscar needs to get a little bit of acceptance that, in certain situations, it might be time now to help Lando.
"I think Oscar has now accepted that, the problem is he is coming close on points and he's still in the hunt himself. That's the tough thing," added Rosberg
As McLaren also battles to maintain their lead in the F1 Constructors' Championship for the first time since 2014, the pressure is on to carefully manage both drivers while maximizing their results.
With team orders likely on the horizon, Sunday's race could reveal how the balance of power between Norris and Piastri might affect not just this weekend but the entire title race.
Today in Singapore Qualifying, Norris was the fastest of all and will start the 2024 Singapore GP from pole position, next to Verstappen. Piastri starts from P5 behind the #1 Red Bull as well as the Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on the second row.
