Brown: I think keeping DRS for 2022 is a good idea

McLaren CEO Zak Brown thinks that Formula 1 should retain the use of DRS as it moves into a new era with the 2022 sporting regulations.

Introduced in 2011, the system was designed to help encourage more overtaking, with most tracks hosting one or two zones where drivers within a second of the car ahead can use it.
The 2022 regulations have been designed with the idea of making close following and overtaking more of a possibility, and it has been speculated that the sport could look to do away with the system.
A decision to remove DRS has not yet been communicated though and Brown feels that it should be kept until the sport gets a better idea of how effective the new regulations have been in achieving their objectives.
"I think from everything everyone has told me, both within my team and others, everyone thinks it [the new rules] will work," he said. "But I think until you get it on track, you don't know.
"So I think to keep DRS initially is a good idea, and then I think, much like the sprint race, let's get these race cars on the track and figure out: Has it worked exactly as prescribed? Do they need modification? Do they need DRS? Do we need it for a less or shorter period of time?
"Because I think just like the sprint race, all we're working through is data and drawings and visuals, and until we see it on the track, we don't know.
"Everyone thinks conceptually, what has been designed should work. But we won't know until we get it on the track," Brown concluded.
