Max Verstappen broke the hearts of all the fans who were hoping that pole position for the 2025 British Grand Prix would be grabbed by Lewis Hamilton or Lando Norris and denied both of them.
Verstappen endured a tough start to his weekend in Silverstone, but some Red Bull trickery transformed the RB21 overnight while a gamble on going with a low downforce, low drag setup paid off.
The reigning
Formula 1 champion piloted that Red Bull to pole position keeping its rear end in check with his driving prowess and leaving the British fans disappointed as none of their home heroes or team could grab pole.
Verstappen left his best till last, as his first Q3 was over two tenths behind the provisional lap time Oscar Piastri posted in the McLaren, but then on his second run, he delivered a stonking lap to take pole while Piastri did not improve which also applied to Norris.
Verstappen's pole time was a 1:24.892, 0.103s clear of Piastri in second while Norris was 0.015s further down the road in third.
Then came George Russell, fourth in the Mercedes after a decent effort on a weekend when the W16 was not really behaving despite cooler conditions in qualifying.
The Briton was 0.137s off the pace and 0.066s clear of his former teammate and seven-time F1 champion, Lewis Hamilton who was only fifth in his Ferrari despite looking good for pole earlier in qualifying.
Ferrari looked strong all weekend long, but failed to deliver when it mattered as Charles Leclerc was sixth behind his teammate in the sister car.
Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but he will drop three placed after serving his penalty from Austria for wiping out Verstappen on Lap 1.
Then came another penalized driver, Oliver Bearman, who delivered a great qualifying performance to post the eighth fastest time on a day when his teammate, Esteban Ocon was only good for 15th in the other Haas.
Too bad, Bearman
will drop ten places for failing to comply with Red flags in the final practice session. As such, Antonelli will start tenth and Bearman will start 18th.
Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly completed the top ten in ninth and tenth respectively. They will start seventh and eighth respectively as Carlos Sainz who was 11th fastest is promoted to ninth.
Alonso maximized Aston Martin's potential while his teammate, Lance Stroll was out of qualifying in Q1 and it was an impressive qualifying from Gasly after early struggles for Alpine and with the extra pressure the crash of his teammate, Franco Colapinto, put on him.
It should be an interesting British Grand Prix on Sunday with race pace among the frontrunners very close while rain may always be a factor at Silverstone.
What the top three said
After another "Simply Lovely" performance to take his 44th career pole position, Verstappen said: "It was tricky out there with the wind. It was shifting around a bit. These cars are extremely sensitive to it.
"That final lap was good enough. This is a proper track when you have to go flat out. You have to be really committed and it's really enjoyable.
"We are quite quick on the straight. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there's rain around or not," he added. "I'm happy with qualifying. It's a big boost for the team as well and I'm excited to go racing tomorrow.
"We'll try. We are going to go racing. We are going to have fun and try to do the best we can," Verstappen concluded.
Piastri lamented a messy final lap in Q3, he commented: "I was happy with my first lap. The first lap was mega, to be honest.
"I was trying to think how I could go quicker and I didn't. The last lap was a little bit messy but it's been tight all weekend. A little bit on table.
"The car has felt mega all weekend but there's been a few points all weekend scratching our head while we are not quicker."
Elaborating about his second Q3 run, the Australian added: "There were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out, but it didn't quite work.
"It's going to be a fun race. It has been very evenly matched between us, Max and the Ferraris - and we saw George even got up there at the end," he concluded.
Third-placed Norris insisted on taking positives despite missing out on pole, he said: "A good qualifying. I'm not going to be unhappy with third, though I'd love to be on top here at Silverstone.
"Max did a good job. Not quick enough today for us, but it's going to be fun. Qualifying here is fast and enjoyable. Still a good day.
"Little margins. Little mistakes. A couple of hundredths here and there can win or lose you the game today," he lamented. "I think it's going to be fun tomorrow.
"I think it's going to be a good battle between the three of us - or probably more with Lewis, Charles and George. It's going to be an interesting Sunday. I'm looking forward to it," the Briton concluded.

Bearman posted the first time but then Verstappen went to the top of the timing screens but Piastri soon betters that and jumps to the top over two tenths clear of the Red Bull ace.

The Hamilton came by and split the McLarens to take take second with Leclerc only good for fifth.
