Before the summer break Valtteri Bottas admitted that it hurt when Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called him a "sensational wingman" after the Hungarian Grand Prix, but now he says he will help title contending teammate Lewis Hamilton only if he is mathematically out of the title race.
Speaking to reporters at Monza, Bottas explained his change of heart, "If the situation is clear that it's the best thing for the team to win both titles then I understand it. Nobody wants to be in that position as a driver but if the situation is so that I can’t win the title, then, of course, I’m willing to help."
"If I have the pace to win the race and if by pure speed I am about to win it, I am sure that the team will look at the situation. I don’t think in any case I would completely lose the freedom to win a race if I am able to do so. It just depends on the situation, if there is a clear way of kind to avoid me stealing points or to avoid Lewis losing points."
"I do trust the team. They have a lot of respect for me and good respect for both drivers. They wouldn’t do anything too harsh," explained Bottas who lies fourth in the championship standings, trailing Hamilton by 87 points.
