Bianchi to miss second practice after big crash during FP1

Marussia's French rookie Jules Bianchi was ruled out of Friday's second practice at the Japanese Grand Prix after crashing his car heavily in the morning session at Suzuka.

On the half hour mark Bianchi's Marussia plowed into the barriers at the second Degner complex at high speed. The front left of the car was ripped from the chassis in the process.

Bianchi said afterwards, "My chassis is damaged too much which is why we're not running. It's a shame, but these things happen in racing. My elbow got stuck between the chassis and the seat so when I had the oversteer moment, I could not turn right any more. I am OK now, I had some pain in the elbow, but now I'm fine."

The Russian-owned Formula 1 team said in a statement that the chassis was repairable but not in the time available between the sessions.

The spare chassis will be built up in time for Saturday's final practice.

Bianchi is sure to start at the back of the field anyway because he has a 10 place grid penalty picked up at the previous race in South Korea when he was handed his third reprimand of the season.

Marussia has yet to score a point in Formula 1 and is usually among the backmarkers.

Giedo van der Garde also crashed, at second Degner, during the 90 minutes session. (Reuters)
