FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem says the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix underlines the Middle East’s growing importance to the championship as the 2025 drivers’ title fight approaches its climax.

In a statement issued in Dubai, Ben Sulayem said the penultimate round at Lusail International Circuit arrives at a moment when Qatar is expanding its role in developing young talent through FIA karting programmes, the Formula 4 Middle East Championship, and wider investment in training for officials and volunteers.
Chief of Formula 1's governing body, Ben Sulayem said: “The Qatar Grand Prix is more than a race. It is a symbol of the country’s ambition, not only to host but to grow motorsport from the grassroots to the global stage.
“Lusail International Circuit stands not just as a world-class venue for Formula 1, but as a testament to our collective vision: combining cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and a long-term commitment to the sport.”
Ben Sulayem said this weekend reaffirms the FIA’s confidence in the Middle East and the region’s increasingly important role in the championship’s calendar, supporting the federation’s goal to expand accessibility, build a broader fan base, and promote inclusivity across global motorsport.

Lusail has become a state-of-the-art facility

Qatar Grand Prix takes it toll on Formula 1 drivers
Lusail has become a central stop on the calendar since joining Formula 1 in 2021, offering a flowing 16-corner layout and multiple overtaking zones designed for close competition.
Its floodlighting provides one of F1’s most striking night race visuals, while upgrades made during the 5.38 km circuit’s renovation 2 years ago improved the experience for drivers and spectators.
The expansion includes a 402-metre pit lane with 50 garages, new race control, media and medical centres, advanced lighting, and 2.5 km of FIA-approved debris fencing, underscoring the venue’s focus on safety, innovation and technical standards.
The FIA continues to prioritise accessibility and diversity, with the MENA Karting Championship Nations Cup playing a key role. Founded by Ben Sulayem in 2020, the latest edition at Lusail last month attracted more than 170 drivers from 18 nations across the region.
With the drivers’ championship entering its decisive phase, this weekend’s Qatar Grand Prix stands as both a showcase of regional investment and a reminder of the Middle East’s long-term stake in the future of Formula 1.
Last year's race was won by Max Verstappen for Red Bull, with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc finishing in P2 ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri in P3.
