The Baku City Circuit is a tricky place. After all, it caught out Charles Leclerc on Friday, as well as Williams rookie Franco Colapinto, on a day filled with wall-scraping and big moments. Today, it claimed Oliver Bearman.

During FP3 on Saturday, Ferrari-backed Bearman crashed his Haas into the barriers at Turn 1. The Ferrari protégé was filling in for one race-banned Kevin Magnussen this weekend in Baku. Ollie hadn’t put a foot wrong since his shining debut for Ferrari at the Saudi Grand Prix, where he scored points in his first Formula 1 race.
However, this weekend, business with Haas is vastly different from Ferrari, as he's out of the limelight and relatively anonymous compared to driving in red.
But he was back in the spotlight when, during FP3, things went wrong. Unsure whether to go for the corner or bail out, Bearman did neither. In an attempt to avoid contact, he scraped the left side of the car and brought out the red flag.
Sky Sports F1's Karun Chandhok summed up the shunt: "He’s bailed out of it way too late and he knows he’s got it wrong. He’s too fast, he’s way wide of the apex. He tried to hang onto it too long. You need to bail out half a second earlier. What you need to keep in mind is that the run off area doesn’t have too much grip."
Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu reacted: "Very frustrating. For me, he can reset and do what he was doing [Saturday]."
It was a reality check for Bearman, as it was for fellow rookie stand-in Colapinto the day before. How they reset, first in Qualy and in the race on Sunday will be interesting to watch. And telling.
