Maurizio Arrivabene was seething after his team botched qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix yesterday, but after watching his team get trounced on in the race on Sunday the Ferrari F1 chief was less emotional and still believing that the impossible is possible for the Italian team this season.
While title rivals Mercedes dominated the race at Suzuka, Ferrari were in the wars with Max Verstappen the 'enemy' that inflicted the most damage on the day in which the slim title chances they had heading to Japan evaporate.
After watching his drivers Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel cross the finish line, fifth and sixth respectively, Arrivabene told Sky F1, "Yesterday we had the problem that everybody knows about, and as I said yesterday I was a bit disappointed - but we win and lose together."
"I have to say the team and drivers reacted very well. We had circumstances during the race and it was clear the podium was not in our hands today. Concerning the future races, I know the situation looks impossible but our challenge is to achieve the impossible."
The big talking point after the race was Verstappen's incidents with both Ferrari drivers.
The first when the Dutchman cut the final Esse when defending third place from Raikkonen, this forced the Finn off track. For this the Red Bull driver was handed a five seconds penalty by race stewards which he served on his way to third place at the end of the 53-lap race.
On lap eight, Vettel was clearly faster but impatient as he lunged at Verstappen into the high-speed Spoon Curve, but it went wrong as the Ferrari tagged the Red Bull, with the red car spinning and ending up facing the wrong way.
It took an age before the field streamed past the stopped Ferrari, Monza all over again and another costly mistake by the German.
But Arrivabene was not pointing fingers, "Why do we have to talk always about mistakes?"
"We had the news about the penalty very late and Sebastian was doing his job. If you want to talk about a race incident, I accept this, but we were not able to exploit our potential."
With four rounds remaining, the world championship next heads to Austin, Texas where Ferrari trail Mercedes by 78 points in the constructors' standings while Vettel is 67 points behind Hamilton in the drivers' title race.
