Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has had a playful dig at his star driver Sebastian Vettel by telling media that he will arrange for elbow protection for the incident-prone German.
Speaking to reporters at the recent Caschi di Oro Awards, hosted by Autosprint at Garage Italia in Milan, Arrivabene joked about Vettel with reporters, "Maybe we will give our driver elbow-pads to fight back when he gets side-by-side with his rivals."
Vettel's failings are well documented however the four times F1 World Champion has also accused his team for dropping the ball when it mattered, revealing how the Italian team went up the garden path with their developments which required a backtrack to older versions of the SF71H to find performance that went mysteriously AWOL in the latter half of the season
Although, when taking stock of the season, Arrivabene did underline "the drivers' mistakes" he also pointed out that off-track matters were also complicated for his team.
The Italian team chief recalled, "In Bahrain there was the incident involving our mechanic Cigarini. When president Sergio Marchionne passed away, the man who wanted me at Ferrari, that left a big gap. Then, on the eve of Austin, we lost one of our engineers."
"So many things have happened outside our control, which goes beyond racing and are part of life. My wish is that luck will help us a little more in the coming season," added Arrivabene.
