McLaren Team Principal, Andrea Stella, labelled recent errors by Lando Norris, especially at race starts as very marginal situations, and vowed to help his driver overcome them.
Norris has been suspect to driving errors especially at the race starts, his most recent at the
Belgian Grand Prix where he dropped from fourth to seventh on the opening lap after going of track at Turn 1 (La Source).
In the
British Grand Prix, Norris was also passed at the start by Max Verstappen as the former was too busy focusing on Lewis Hamilton ahead leaving the door open for the Red Bull driver to overtake him.
Back in Spain and Hungary, the McLaren driver also had bad starts from pole, losing positions and ultimately ruining his race.
Norris has been hard on himself for what he labeled "stupid" mistakes and insisted he needed a "recent" over the summer break.
But Andrea Stella insisted on downplaying the situation, he told the media including GrandPrix247: "First of all, these kinds of situations, they’re always very, very marginal.
"I think Lando got a little distracted from what was happening on the inside and ran out of track. It’s marginal things, it just I think requires little adjustments here and there.
"Certainly, we work with Lando, like we work with Oscar [Piastri], to try and see all the opportunities in which we can improve individually, but also collaborate better to either be more prepared or to use better our abilities and talents.
"So, I think it doesn’t necessarily change our attitude, but definitely gives us some elements to analyze how some of these missed opportunities manifest themselves.
"Like any other athlete or any other driver, I think Lando himself, with the support of the team, will have to think, 'What can I do better to make sure we capitalize on the good work we are doing?'
"I think he was in a good starting position [at Spa], but then once we lost the position at the start with this low deg [tyre degradation] and difficult overtaking, it definitely made our lives difficult," Stella pointed out.
Norris is currently second in the 2024
Formula 1 Drivers' Championship, 78 points behind Verstappen.
