Fernando Alonso will quit Formula 1 at the end of this season, but time is running out fast for the Spaniard, or McLaren for that matter, to secure a competitive IndyCar programme for next season. Marshall Pruett writing for Racer reports: "Alonso is expected to test a Honda-powered Andretti Autosport Dallara DW12 early next month to gauge his interest in the 2018 IndyCar package on a road course."
The report adds that the first test is likely to take place after the Portland Grand Prix round of the Indycar series on 2 September. Alonso is expected to do a day or two at Barber Motorsports Park at the wheel of the Andretti Autosport Dallara DW12. Neither party has confirmed the test yet.
According to Racer sources Andretti Autosport and Harding Racing are looking to unite operations to run Alonso, like last year in McLaren orange and title name, in a Chevrolet powered car.
Considering their recent history, Honda are unlikely to countenance supplying an Alonso-McLaren project no matter where.
