Amid a season packed with controversial rule changes, head line grabbing incidents and paddock sub-plots Fernando Alonso has likened Formula 1 to a sit-com but at the same time admits a third world title is still on his agenda.
“Everything in Formula 1 is a comedy,” Alonso told the official F1 website. “Nothing is really serious, so it’s definitely not a drama. It’s like one of those comedies where you get hit and in the next episode you’re back to normal.
"Jim Carrey - any of his roles! I think he would do well in F1, making a mockery of everything," added the Spaniard mischievously.
At 35 time is running out for Alonso, but when asked what he still wants to achieve in F1, he admits he is still chasing a third world title
"Another championship is the ultimate target," declared Alonso. "We are working hard on that project. And with the new regulations in place next year we will probably get the excitement back as the cars will be much more attractive - and much faster."
As for staying motivated after 16 years at the pinnacle of the sport, in an era where cars are extraordinarily advanced and high-tech but reportedly not challenging to drive, Alonso said, “I hope to feel the ‘wow’ factor that should come with the rule changes next year."
"With wider, faster tyres,” he noted. “My goal remains the third world title, whilst also being in much more exciting and quicker races.”
After all these years, Alonso still cherishes his place in Formula 1, "Success is the most important thing of the enjoyment of being here. You are here to compete - you are here to compete against 21 other drivers and try to be the best in the world."
"So being on the podium, winning a race or even a championship: these are the moments of ultimate enjoyment. But then there is also the joy about other things that surround F1."
"The travelling that gave me the opportunity to travel to many countries I probably would have never seen in another life: India, Korea, Russia or Azerbaijan."
"I am happy with all the fantastic side effects the sport has given me," mused Alonso who has not won a F1 race since his victory at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix.
