Reports are gathering steam claiming that Fernando Alonso and McLaren are at the end of their partnership, the Spaniard apparently not part of the team's future plans in Formula 1 or Indycar.
This brings to an end a partnership that once promised much but in the end delivered very little and in fact, resulted in the great Spaniard losing interest in F1 and quitting the top flight, frustrated that his career went backwards from the moment he returned to the team he first drove for in 2007.
No official confirmation has yet been made on the report first published by Motorsport magazine, who
quoted a McLaren spokesperson: "Fernando, like all McLaren drivers past and present, will always be part of the McLaren family and we have a strong relationship with him.
"We have no plans to run him in any further F1 test sessions this year as our focus remains on both Carlos and Lando. He is free to pursue other opportunities in motorsport and we would support him in doing so."
At the start of this season, Alonso was earmarked for testing with the team but that never materialised. In May he endured the McLaren Indy 500 fiasco that appears to have sullied the relationship between the two parties beyond repair.
However, McLaren are adamant that the Spaniard will remain an ambassador but no indication of the type of role he will play was revealed.
Meanwhile, Alonso's future plans are uncertain, but he has more than once said he has some exciting projects in the pipeline which he will announce in due course.
The 37-year-old is unlikely to return to F1 as Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari have all insisted he is not on their radar.
