It was clear from day one of preseason testing that Mercedes had built a very impressive 1.6-litre V6 power unit – the PU106A Hybrid – for the sport’s all new turbo era, and without doubt it was the choice piece of kit to have bolted on to your Formula 1 car in 2014.
Add to this a fantastic chassis in the Mercedes W05 and you have arguably the most dominant F1 car in the history of the sport. That you had some handy chaps doing the pedalling, sure did help. But let’s face it the W05 car in just about any decent driver’s hands was going to be a winner.
It won 16 out of 19 times, in dominant style and comfortably cruised to the constructors’ title, while only one of the two chaps in the silver cockpits was ever going to win the drivers’ title.
Thus a big round of applause to the team, led by Paddy Lowe and his lieutenants, who were behind the success of the design and development of the W05 which went on to trounce the opposition in an ominous manner – hard to think they will be reeled in any time soon…
