No one saw it coming, but when it did the reasons became patently obvious – Sebastian Vettel to Ferrari was a huge surprise to everyone, including Red Bull themselves.
From day one of the new v6 turbo era Vettel was not a happy camper, his body language throughout preseason testing revealed a four times champion very unhappy with what he was driving. And he spared no time in verbalising his dissatisfaction.
Then along came the new season and regular trouncing by Red Bull new boy Daniel Ricciardo had the world champ on the back foot where he stayed all season long.
It was never a secret that Vettel coveted a Ferrari deal sometime in his career, even during his dominant heyday he cast a wanton eye towards the Reds and spoke of them with reverence. Fast forward to August 2014 and who gets the keys to a spanking new Ferrari California? None other than Vettel’s father Norbert… As they say the writing was on the wall but we didn’t see it!
Between Monza and Singapore a deal was struck between Vettel and Maranello, the cat was out the bag and (despite earlier signs) caught everyone by surprise… Ask the Red Bull big boys and Fernando Alonso!
