Are Scuderia Ferrari drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, worth a quick bet for the 2026 Formula 1 World Drivers Championship?
According to the bookies,
George Russell is the two-to-one favourite to walk away with the 2026 World Driver’s Champion for Mercedes. Talk about pressure. But their George can handle that.
Max Verstappen is second favourite for Red Bull at 10/3, new Red Bull Ford engine and all. And Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton third and fourth at 5/1 and 10/3, respectively.
A good bet. But champions McLaren and Lando Norris at 10/1 and Oscar Piastri at 14/1 will likely look even better to the punter. But us tifosi like where the layers have our men, and for good reason too, it seems.
Dominant Winter World Champions
The 2026 Winter World Championship makes this year’s real thing far more difficult to read. Yet in spite of the new rules, suspected super-sandbagging and some teams times skewed by tech issues and the like, Ferrari certainly came out smiling.
Perhaps not smiling quite enough to fully convince the bookies, but certainly enough to put that spring in both the Scuderia and us Tifosi steps. Best of all, its Ferrari’s bold new attitude that stands it out most.
That rear wing, the exhaust fin, those cast iron heads and a launch system to make Musk’s SpaceX green, are all part of it. Never mind, that 2026 Winter World Title.
Fred Vasseur: We pushed the limit
Even more significant, perhaps, is that before he hopped on his red jet to Melbourne, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur was positive about both his team and Formula 1 in general.
“We pushed the boundaries with the new SF-26,” Fred admits. “We explored the technical regulations and aggressively pushed to the limit.
“This is the way we innovate, not just on the visible parts of the car, but we’re glad that some of those new solutions attracted attention.
“We have also introduced other innovations in hidden areas, like the suspension, cooling and engine solutions. I believe this of course also applies to all the teams, but I like to see our engineers pushing boundaries.
Ferrari told the FIA everything
“It’s also important that we did all that legally,” Vasseur adds. “We discussed our innovations with the FIA from the outset. We simply cannot waste wind tunnel hours or budget by risking illegal solutions to the track that don’t comply with the regulations."
Vasseur is also surprisingly complimentary about the new for 2026 Formula 1 regulations, he added: “It’s in F1’s DNA to bitch about everything, but I believe in general, everyone is surprised.
“Some said we’d be close to Formula 2 pace, yet here we are already only a couple of seconds off the 2025 times. Last year’s Bahrain test temperatures were also much lower, so times were faster. The overall scenario is much better than what many feared.
“There are some critical aspects, but we’re only at the very beginning of this technical cycle. We'll adapt, develop and make the necessary adjustments, but it’s important that we have strong competition and a tight battle between two or more teams,
“Being a couple seconds slower than last season does not matter. What matters is to is to be a tenth or two faster than all our rivals!" Vasseur concluded.
