Formula 1 has produced iconic moments and unforgettable battles over the years. Some races are so legendary that many fans still talk about them decades later.

Just like unforgettable matches leading up to FIFA 2026, these iconic F1 races bring global attention and create memories that last a lifetime.
We have picked out some of the best F1 races of all time. Here are the most iconic races in F1 history.

1.  2008 Brazilian Grand Prix

The 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix is considered one of the most dramatic F1 races in history. The title in the race was decided on the final corner. Heading into the race, Lewis Hamilton led Felipe Massa by seven points. Massa needed to win the race and hope Hamilton finished sixth or lower to win the title.
Massa crossed the finish line in first place, while Hamilton was running in seventh place. It looked like Massa had secured the World Champion title. However, the weather conditions created chaos in the final laps. Rain was affecting tire strategies, and almost everyone was struggling on dry tires in wet conditions. Hamilton passed Timo Glock in a dramatic twist, making him moved back into fifth place and securing the title by just one point.

2.  2019 German Grand Prix

Another iconic race in F1 history is the 2019 German Grand Prix, with six Safety Cars seen in the race and countless pit stops in changing weather. Rainfall began even before the race started. There was standing water on the track, and Sergio Perez was the first one to spin out.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc followed, sliding off at the slippery drag strip on Lap 29. Hamilton lost control just a lap later and received a 5-second penalty for entering the pit lane incorrectly. Meanwhile, Nico Hülkenberg slid off and crashed while running in 4th place.

3.  2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

One of the most iconic F1 races of all time is the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, with the legendary rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt. Heavy rain made the track dangerously slippery, and it also caused poor visibility.
The extreme weather led Lauda, who had an accident earlier,  to withdraw after two laps for safety reasons. Meanwhile, Hunt pushed on despite struggling with tire issues. Hunt finished third and secured the title by one point.

5.  2012 Brazilian Grand Prix

The 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix is one of the greatest races in F1 history. Sebastian Vettel fought to secure his third World Championship. Heading into the final race, Vettel held a slim point lead over Fernando Alonso.
However, weather conditions made Vettel spin around on the opening lap and crashed with another car. He dropped to last place, but then steadily climbed through the field over the next 70 laps. Meanwhile, Alonso drove smoothly and finished second. Vettel eventually finished sixth and secured the title by three points.
