Born in 2000 in Jyväskylä, Kalle Rovanperä inherited his passion for speed from his father, former WRC driver Harri Rovanperä. At the age of 8, a video of Kalle driving a rally car went viral, and at 10, he competed in his first rally.
His professional debut in the WRC came in 2017, when the 17-year-old Finn shocked the world by finishing sixth in Rally Sweden. In 2019, he took the WRC-2 Pro title, and in 2020, he moved to the top Toyota team.
Can it be done: Rally to Formula 1 for a driver?
The real triumph came in 2021: victory at Rally Estonia made him the youngest WRC stage winner in history (20 years and 9 months). In 2022, Rovanperä won his first world championship title, winning four stages and dominating in the hybrid Rally1. In 2023, he repeated his success, adding five more victories.
In 2024, despite injuries and experiments with a partial schedule, he won two rallies. In the current 2025 season, Kalle is third in the championship, behind Sébastien Ogier and Elfyn Evans, with three victories to his name.
His statistics are impressive: 14 WRC stages, 29 podiums, 50 stages with the best time. Rovanperä is a master of adaptation: from the snowy roads of Sweden to the asphalt of Monte Carlo, from the gravel of Finland to the sands of Saudi Arabia.
His style is aggressive, intuitive, with phenomenal control on the edge of traction. Therefore, there is a high probability that Kalle will be able to adapt to calmer and more measured races with open wheels.
But rallying is chaotic: unpredictable weather, different surfaces, navigation with a co-driver. Formula 1 is the complete opposite: circuit racing, where seconds are won on the perfect line, with qualifying, pit stops and tyre strategy.
Rovanperä: A rally legend already!
Rovanperä is no stranger to the circuit. In 2024, he made his debut in the Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux and Italy, winning three races and showing his speed on tracks such as Monza and Spa. In November 2024, he drove 50 laps in a 2012 Red Bull RB8 at the Red Bull Ring — and noted that it "was cool after a long wait."
Plus tests in F4 and Renault 3.5 in his youth. He is currently working in a simulator with Hitech (F2 team) and is planning tests in 2025–2026. The plan is clear: Super Formula in 2026 (a series with F2-level cars, 700+ hp, high downforce) to adapt to open wheels, then F2 in 2027.
Success in Japan will open doors: Loai Lawson and Pierre Gasly went through Super Formula to F1, and Red Bull (Kale's sponsor) likes the bold.
Chances of success? High, but not guaranteed. The pros are obvious. His age (25 is ideal for F1), talent (he learns new things faster than others), and support from Toyota and Red Bull. In 2026, F1 is changing the rules: new engines, new teams.
Cons: lack of experience in junior formulas (F3/F2), where a CV is built. Rally style and improvisation can help in wet races, but qualifying requires millimetre-perfect driving. If Kale wins in Super Formula, F2 will be a springboard to the top.
