Juan Pablo Montoya believes Fernando Alonso is one of the few drivers capable of challenging Max Verstappen for a Formula 1 world title, suggesting the Spaniard might even be “tougher” than the reigning champion.

Speaking on his MontoyAS W-Radio Colombia podcast ahead of the 2026 season, the Colombian said the outcome would depend entirely on Aston Martin and Adrian Newey producing a car good enough to fight for wins: “If Alonso ultimately has a better car than Verstappen, you have to wonder if Max has the experience to compete with someone like him."
Montoya believes the mental side of such a battle would be fascinating: “Max is mentally very strong right now, everything is falling into place and it’s working. But what if he’s up against an Alonso?
"If he has a real chance of winning the title, he’ll always give it his all. As we say in Colombia, ‘Alonso is tougher than Verstappen.’ When it comes down to it, he won’t stop at anything," Montoya added.
Whether that clash ever happens remains uncertain. Alonso has repeatedly hinted that retirement is approaching, depending on Aston Martin’s progress. Montoya continued: “Alonso is really waiting to see what happens with next year’s car. We’re all curious to see what Adrian Newey will create.”
Alonso has previously said he expects 2026 to be his final season, though he has not ruled out extending his stay if the project shows promise.
Montoya added: “Fernando wants to give them another year or two, I think If next year isn’t good, he might stay another season, especially if he sees things are going in the right direction. After all, you don’t pass up a chance at the title.”
