As speculation intensifies around Max Verstappen’s future, Johnny Herbert believes a move to Aston Martin would make the most sense for the reigning Formula 1 World Champion and also praised George Russell’s growth as Mercedes team leader.

Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull is uncertain, and Russell yet to sign a new deal are among the biggest talking points in Austria this weekend. Toto Wolff was evasive on George Russell’s contract situation, Herbert told Vision4Sport that, behind the scenes, both Mercedes and Aston Martin may be playing strategic games to lure Verstappen.
“The only thing a driver board wants to know is: What are you going to give me next year? Show me the data on the power unit. Show me the car’s direction. Then I can work it out,” Herbert said.
He added, “Aston Martin have put together a strong team, a new factory, wind tunnel—plus the Honda engine for next year. Mercedes are in a similar position. But which side is playing the game? There are rumours of George and Aston Martin.
"Maybe that’s Aston playing a game because Max is supposed to be going there. Or maybe George is throwing that out because he hasn’t signed with Mercedes yet. In my gut. I would think Max and Aston makes the most sense,” ventured Herbert, a Le Mans and multiple Grand Prix winner, and Formula 1 veteran turned pundit.
Prompting the trending Silly Season question: Will Max Verstappen end up at Mercedes or Aston Martin, or stay put at Red Bull? Time will tell.

Herbert: Russell is not afraid to speak up for himself or the team

Although Verstappen sits on the edge of a race ban due to penalty points, Herbert said the Dutchman won’t back down, nor should he: “One silly little mistake and he could miss a race, which could be detrimental. But he’ll still play hard. He’s right to do that. He can’t completely change his driving style because then others will think they’ve got the better of him. I just think he’ll make slightly more rational decisions.”
While Russell’s future with Mercedes remains unresolved, Herbert is impressed with the fellow Briton: “He’s got very good mental strength. He’s not afraid to speak up for himself or the team. There’s a confidence there that comes across in a powerful way. Canada was a great performance. If the car’s consistent, he’s going to be a threat.”
Herbert highlighted Russell’s consistency and maturity in navigating both internal team dynamics and external pressure: “He doesn’t make that many mistakes. He’s strong mentally, and that allows him to absorb everything and still deliver.”
