Franco Colapinto has taken the Formula 1 world by storm after being called up to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams for a nine-race stint and after his first three very tricky race weekends in the top flight, it's hard to find anyone not thoroughly impressed with the rookie.

Relatively unknown before his debut at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Colapinto has quickly become the talk of the paddock, impressing everyone with his composure and pace. The 21-year-old Argentinian driver's journey from the lower ranks of motorsport to the 777th driver to race in F1 has been nothing short of remarkable.
Hailing from Buenos Aires, Colapinto’s rise to the pinnacle of motorsport was not an easy one. His father even sold their home to support his racing dreams. In his first full season of Formula 2, Colapinto was plucked from Williams’ driver academy by team principal James Vowles to fill in for 'never good enough for F1 (plus very crash-prone) Sargeant.
Since then, Colapinto has repaid the team's faith by delivering stellar performances in his first three races. Vowles himself has been among those impressed, praising Colapinto’s ability to handle the pressure that comes with competing in Formula 1. “In Monza, that was about what I would have hoped for, effectively.
"Going to a new track that you've never been to before [in Baku] and being on the pace, really, in FP1, and even after an accident, coming straight back onto the pace is a challenge. He’s very, very good at absorbing all the pressure that’s on his shoulders and just delivering," said Vowles, pointing out Colapinto’s calm demeanour under pressure, a crucial trait for any driver looking to succeed in F1.
“You can hear over the radio, just listen to his voice. He’s just incredibly calm and collected. It’s a sign of a really good individual who’s able to cope with what’s happening,” Vowles added.
Formula 1's analyst Jolyon Palmer noted the rookie’s ability to handle the varied challenges of circuits like Monza, Baku, and Singapore with ease: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone surprise me with the level of their early performances as much as Colapinto has. Logic says it must be securing his future in the sport.”

Palmer and Hinchcliffe impressed by Franco

Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe echoed similar sentiments, calling Colapinto’s start “brilliant” and commending his racecraft and composure, adding: “His race started in fantastic fashion, as he pulled off the pass of the day in a four-wide move into Turn 1 that successfully earned him three spots.
“He will be disappointed to not score [points], but holding on and not letting himself push beyond his physical condition took a maturity you don’t normally see from 21-year-old drivers,” said Hinchcliffe.
In only his second race with Williams, Colapinto scored points with P8 in Baku, his pace and consistency have earned him comparisons to his more experienced teammate, Alex Albon. Colapinto even outqualified Albon in Baku, a remarkable feat for a rookie with no prior experience at the circuit.
Palmer highlighted: “He’s matched highly regarded Williams teammate Alex Albon for one-lap pace incredibly well so far, even outqualifying him in Baku.”
There is already speculation about Colapinto’s future in Formula 1, with Vowles open to discussing potential opportunities for the young Argentinian with other teams, including Audi/Sauber.
However, Vowles remains cautious about rushing Colapinto’s development, noting that his current performances are the result of careful preparation behind the scenes.
“If we’d done this at the beginning of the year, I don’t think you’d see the Franco you have today,” Vowles said, adding that the team’s decision to bring Colapinto in came at the right time.
With six GPs still to go in his debut stint, his performances are already solidifying his place on the F1 grid. While his journey to Formula 1 was unexpected, his early showing suggests it won’t be long before Franco Colapinto is a permanent fixture in the sport at the highest level.
