McLaren announced on Tuesday that Will Courtenay will join them as a Sporting Director coming from Red Bull Racing, but did not announce the exact date of joining for the British engineer.
Courtenay is reportedly contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2026 and has been their Head of Race Strategy for the past 14 years. He joined he Milton Keynes outfit back in 2003 when the team was still known as Jaguar.
McLaren said in a statement: "McLaren Racing today announces that Will Courtenay will join the McLaren Formula 1 team as Sporting Director.
"Reporting into Randeep Singh, Racing Director, the role will help grow the team's sporting operations as the team continues its pursuit of success in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship.
"Will joins McLaren after 20 years at Red Bull Racing, where he is currently in the role of Head of Race Strategy, bringing with him a wealth of experience.
"Will's expertise will add further depth to the team's sporting operation and will help drive performance within the racing team," the statement concluded.
McLaren team principal, Andrea Stella, commented on the team's new hire, he said: "We are delighted to welcome Will to McLaren.
"His experience, professionalism and passion for motorsport make him the ideal candidate to lead our F1 sporting function. We are now entering a key phase in our journey as a team, and we are confident that he will be a great addition to our strong leadership team as we strive to continue challenging for wins and championships," the Italian explained.
The announcement comes after the Singapore Grand Prix which was won by McLaren's Lando Norris from Max Verstappen who was second for Red Bull.
McLaren are locked in a fight for the 2024
Formula 1 constructors' title with Red Bull and currently lead the standings by 41 points.
Norris is chasing Verstappen for the F1 drivers' crown and is 52 points behind the reigning champion with six races remaining, three of which will be running the Sprint format.
