Formula 1 is well represented in the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours by two teams and 17 drivers in the Hypercar category alone, from young guns to veterans including 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button.

The two teams with ‘F1 family’ are of course local French team Alpine and the legendary Ferrari team, who last year famously won in their return to the world’s greatest sportscar endurance race, after four decades of closing down their World Endurance Championship projects all those years ago.

They are now very much a force and will be all out to defend their title. Notably, Antonio Giovinazzi is proof that if drivers do not make it in F1 they have a chance to become stars in WEC which is growing from strength to strength.

And for many, victory at Le Mans for a driver is as prestigious as winning a Grand Prix. Such is the stature of the great 24-hour race. Hence, Giovinazzi who never crack it as an F1 driver has now carved a fine career for himself in sportscars.

If the Ferrari F1 team is the heart of Maranello, the Hypercar project is its soul. Giovinazzi shares the AF Corse run #51 Ferrari 499P with Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado.

Alpine will be looking to their WEC effort to bolster flagging fortunes and turmoil in F1. A home win would be just the tonic to inspire the entire beleaguered French team.

Ditched Haas driver turned Mercedes F1 reserve, Mick Schumacher is getting mileage in the #36 Alpine A424 with teammates Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere.

Jenson Button ‘contested’ last year’s Le Mans 24 in a NASCAR! This year he will be much quicker in the #38 Hertz Team Jota Porsche he will share with Oliver Rasmussen and Phil Hanson. The 2009 F1 World Champion has a good chance to add “Le Mans Winner” accolade to his illustrious CV.
