Plans for a sci-fi-style, state-of-the-art, multi-billion dollar, built-for Formula 1 (and other motorsports) venue in Qiddiya City – to be known as Speed Park Track – have been revealed ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

As Formula 1 sets up for Round 2 of the 2024 F1 World Championship in glittering Jeddah, plans for a  ‘fantasy’ track within sight of the Tuwaiq Mountains were revealed.

Speed Park Track is being billed as: “Designed by race drivers for race drivers, the track will form a central part of the transformation of Qiddiya City into a global destination for entertainment, sports and culture based on the power of play.”

Commenting on the launch, Managing Director of Qiddiya Investment Company, Abdullah Aldawood, said: “The Speed Park Track will be a true embodiment of Qiddiya’s power of play philosophy and position Qiddiya City as the home of Saudi motorsport and one of the world’s leading motorsport venues.

“Visitors and spectators will be treated to one of the most unique race experiences in the world with a pioneering track that will be ready to host some of the world’s biggest motorsport events,” added Aldawood.

$4-billion project for an FIA Grade 1 and FIM Grade A track

Meed reported last month that: “Saudi Arabia’s Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC) awarded local United Maintenance and Contracting Company (Unimac) an estimated SR1.8bn ($480-million) contract to deliver the racetrack and associated infrastructure at Qiddiya’s Speed Park.

“The racetrack will meet the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) requirements for homologation, including the required drainage systems, safety elements and race electronics.

“It will be an FIA Grade 1 / FIM Grade A track at the resort core in Qiddiya Entertainment City. Once complete, the circuit will be capable of hosting Formula 1 Grand Prix and motorcycling MotoGP races.”

The report adds: “The initial scope of works is understood to be valued at about SR7bn ($1.9-billion). Later works, which are still at the design stage, could take the final value to up to SR15bn ($4.0-billion).”
