Verstappen: We don't want to get ahead of ourselves

Max Verstappen insisted Red Bull are not getting ahead of themselves going to Bahrain’s Formula 1 season opener, an attempt to hide the obvious – he and his RB20 are the package to beat in 2024.

The triple F1 Champion enters his ninth season as a Red Bull Racing driver gunning for a fourth F1 Drivers Crown successively, and from we have seen from from the three days of pre-season testing in Bahrain last week, the chances that any other team will overhaul the reigning champions are meagre at best.

But the smart way is always to downplay your chances ahead of the season, and that is exactly what Verstappen did, previewing the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix.

“I am looking forward to the weekend ahead in Bahrain,” he said in Red Bull‘s press release. “We had a good few testing days and learned a lot from the car.

“Of course, we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and we still need to make sure we do everything right to have a strong first weekend,” he insisted. “Everyone has done plenty of laps here in Bahrain, so hopefully shouldn’t encounter too many surprises in terms of set up direction for the week ahead.

“All in all, I am excited to get the season underway and start racing again,” the Dutchman concluded.

Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, on his final year of his current Red Bull contract, and fighting for his future with the team after an inconsistent campaign in 2023 – despite finishing runner up – seemed to be more at ease with the RB20 compared to the RB19.

Perez: I want to take things race by race

Perez said: “It’s finally time to go racing and I am really looking forward to this weekend. We had a solid week of testing, we maximized everything we possibly could and the car felt really good, I was happy with it and we feel the reliability is there.

“It’s always interesting to see how things change on the first weekend, going into qualifying and then race day with a lot of new concepts on the grid, a lot of other teams look strong but it’s so hard to tell from testing.

“We have taken a new direction with the RB20,” the Mexican pointed out, “and I am excited to jump in the car in a competitive environment and see how we match up.

“I am not looking too far ahead, I want to get comfortable with the car and take things race by race, I am expecting 2024 to be a close battle between teams, which could make things fun!” Perez concluded.

While Red Bull have shown that they are the team to beat in 2024, there are still other factors that could prove detrimental to their F1 Title defense campaign, and that is mainly the investigation into alleged “inappropriate behavior” by their boss Christian Horner towards a female colleague.

Should Horner be found guilty and ousted, how will Red Bull’s 2024 F1 season unravel?
