Speaking ahead of the newly unveiled MCL38‘s shakedown at the Silverstone Circuit today, Oscar Piastri has high hopes for the 2024 Formula 1 season, his second year in the top flight with McLaren.

Piastri, now heading into his second season in Formula 1, will be looking to build upon an impressive debut campaign.

The 22-year-old was one of just four drivers to secure a race victory in 2023, as he saw the chequered flag first in the Qatar Grand Prix Sprint race. He scored another three podiums to finish the season ninth in the Drivers’ Championship with 97 points, helping McLaren Racing to fourth in the Constructors’ Standings.

McLaren revealed their 2024 challenger earlier today, with the MCL38 expected for its on-track debut later at the Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom.

There are hopes that the Woking-based outfit will close the gap to the likes of Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari and potentially challenge for the team Championship this year.

Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris expects progress up the grid in 2024, and the Australian driver echoes that sentiment.

Expectations are high at McLaren that they will be far better than last year this time

By the end of 2023, McLaren were fighting for podiums on a regular basis. However, the start of the year was far from competitive for the British outfit, as they failed to score in the opening two rounds.

On McLaren’s MCL38 launch press release, Piastri expects to start the season much stronger than they did in the last campaign. He said: “We won’t know where we stand in terms of competitiveness until we go racing in Bahrain, but we’ve been preparing as best as we possibly can by spending time in the simulator, working closely with everyone who’s designed, built and will run the car to ensure we’re ready to start strongly.

“I’m looking forward to the next few weeks leading into a busy year. A massive thank you to the team for everything they’ve done so far to prepare us for 2024. I’m really excited to properly kick off my second season in F1.”

Piastri will be driving the MCL38 at Silverstone for the 2024 challenger’s first time on track. The Aussie couldn’t hide his excitement about the day ahead, stating: “It’s great to be able to drive the MCL38 on track for the first time today. It’s an important milestone in our development for the year and I’m excited to see it on track in its new livery.”

McLaren will next head to pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit on 21-23 February. The first race of the season will be the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix on 2 March, where the relative pace of the MCL38 will be revealed.
