Allison: Plenty of action still in current regulations

James Allison, Mercedes’ Technical Director, claimed the current ground effect Formula 1 regulations still offer areas of innovation for the teams.

While Red Bull are the F1 team that reacted best to the current set of aero-rules that were launched in 2022, and with various teams copying the reigning Champions’ solution, Mercedes’ Allison is not ruling out the potential of having other solutions.

Allison is on a mission now to deliver a competitive Mercedes W15 for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell to drive in the 2024 F1 season, which would be a major departure from the team’s approach since 2022.

And while Red Bull’s philosophy is clearly the winning one with Christian Horner claiming the cars will start converge, that won’t stop engineers from coming up with new ideas.

Quoted by Motorsport.com, Allison said: “I think most people will be iterating down a similar sort of avenue. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for innovation at all.

“These cars, and it is no secret, run super-near the ground and that’s where they get their best performance,” he pointed out.

“But there is also the ground there, so it is just trying to figure out how you can reliably, precisely and in an informed way, place the car at a point above the ground that you know will be survivable from a skid legality point of view, but will also give you every bit of downforce that the car is capable of offering.

“There is plenty of action there still! the Mercedes engineer concluded.

Allison’s sentiments were echoed by his Alpine counterpart Matt Harman who has recently said that while Alpine might be inspired by what other teams are doing, the French team will follow their own way.

Harman said at the time: “There are some other great cars there as well that have got some really interesting developments. And it’s about trying to understand what you’re doing, what they’re doing.

“In the end, if we just follow those people, we will never be in front of them,” he insisted.

The 2024 F1 season will get rolling soon with McLaren already revealing their 2024 livery while Haas will kick start the second batch of reveals on February 2.
