Horner: Ferrari crazy of the didn't renew Leclerc's contract

Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team boss, commented on reports that Ferrari extended Charles Leclerc’s contract, insisting they’d be crazy if they didn’t.

Earlier this week, reports in the Italian Media emerged, claiming that Leclerc’s Formula 1 future with Ferrari has been decided as the driver with remain at Maranello until 2029, with an official announcement imminent.

While there hasn’t been an official announcement yet from Ferrari, the team has labeled the reports regarding Leclerc’s future as “speculation”.

Horner who was attending the premiere of the Sky Original film “Ferrari”, was asked to comment on the Leclerc reports on the red carpet of the event.

“It’s totally natural,” he told Sky Sports F1. “He’s a great driver and I’m sure they’ll want to keep hold of him.

“They’d be crazy if they didn’t,” the 50-year-old Briton insisted.

Leclerc’s future has been subject to speculation and rumors, some of which claimed he may be on his way to Mercedes, in what could effectively be a switch, whereby Lewis Hamilton joins Ferrari instead.

At the same event, Toto Wolff was also asked about the Leclerc/Ferrari contact reports, he said: “I don’t know anything about the contractual situation there, but he’s a great guy and why wouldn’t Ferrari sign him?”

Earlier in 2023, Wolff was quizzed whether Leclerc could have a future at Mercedes, the Austrian’s answer leaving the door ajar on what could happen in the future.

“Charles is a super guy and, for the long-term future, someone you need to always have on your radar. And that’s clear. But not for the short and the medium term,” Wolff claimed.

Leclerc has joined Ferrari in 2019 and has since won five races and amassed 23 pole positions. He finished the 2023 F1 Drivers’ Championship fifth with 206 points.

Big Question: Does Leclerc have any other options than Ferrari beyond 2024?
