Ahead of the opening race of the 2023 Formula 1 campaign, the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday 5 March, competing teams and drivers are busy testing their cars.

The key objective will be maximizing every ounce of performance, although as always, reliability could also be the difference between winning or even finishing races, as engineers battle against the clock to resolve prevailing issues.

Red Bull gain from Honda power unit improvements

Prior to the 2022 F1 season, engine manufacturers were striving to achieve peak performance from their power units, following the introduction of new regulations and E10 fuel usage. Every team found themselves battling to combat significant losses in engine performances, caused by the increased internal load of engines.

“We made every effort to recover the performance loss due to the E10 fuel,” Honda’s F1 project leader Tetsushi Kakuda explained this week. “Several problems surfaced during the 2022 season. We have been working to address those problems for this season,” he confirmed. “In addition to improving reliability, we deepen our understanding of our PU to further optimising the control and energy management,” says Kakuda, prior to pre-season testing.

Early in the 2022 season, Red Bull initially struggled to resolve issues with their Honda engines, which means improvements on that front will certainly be welcome, along with potentially being advantageous while preparing for the 2023 campaign. Of course, this will depend entirely on how much progress the other engine manufacturers have made.

Many teams were prepared to take greater levels of risk, pushing for performance gains from engines fuelled by the new mixture, albeit with inevitable reductions in proven reliability. Honda seem confident about having made the greatest strides forward, getting the balance just right, undoubtedly providing Red Bull with increased confidence in their power unit.

Porpoising still an issue for Mercedes

Throughout much of the 2022 F1 season, it almost seemed like “porpoising” became a new buzzword for teams and their drivers. This term refers to the “bouncing” motion observed in the modern generation of cars, akin to that of a dolphin or porpoise moving across the surface of water, hence the descriptive turn of phrase.

Not only was this kind of motion incredibly uncomfortable for drivers, and harmful to their health, mechanics and engineers were tasked with looking into resolving the issue. Changing the ride height was one option, although doing so inevitably affected aerodynamics and overall performance. Lewis Hamilton was far from happy about the porpoising of his car, while Mercedes boss Toto Wolff admitted it was a major issue for his team.

Equally concerned, the FIA granted teams the flexibility to modify their cars, granting the installation of internal stays that could improve stability and reduce porpoising. For the majority of teams, this was a simple application, hidden within the ample space provided within side pods. However, the zero-pod approached by Mercedes made their longer stays less effective, particularly when breaking and reducing speed around curves.

Interestingly, it seems that Mercedes are determined to maintain their zero-pod philosophy, apparently keen to unlock the full potential of their unique design. But with porpoising still an ongoing concern for their W13 car, they are also preparing a “Plan B” variant, more akin to those of Red Bull and Ferrari, which could be introduced if the bouncing problem hasn’t been fully resolved to their satisfaction.

Hopes and expectations for F1 2023
