Indycar is finally coming to Ohio in 2023!

When it comes to auto racing in Ohio, popular racing companies like NASCAR and Formula 1 are not on the calendar in the Buckeye State. However, that is not the case with the Indycar series.

On July 2nd, 2023, Indycar will host the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio. Taking place in Lexington, Ohio, this is an annual event that has taken place at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course since 2007. It is a race that lasts 90 laps.

What Is Indycar Racing?

Touted as North America’s premier open-wheel racing series, Indycar has drivers from all over the world spanning 11 total countries. Indycar races are not one and the same. Tracks vary from superspeedways, road courses, short ovals, and street course racing.

Indycar drivers are pushed to the limit. They drive cars that weigh 1,500 pounds that are two inches off the ground and can go up to 240 miles per hour.

Similar to the growth in popularity of Formula 1 racing in the United States, Indycar is also taking a step up in the ranks. 2023 will only be the fourth time in the past 50 years that Indycar will be nationally televised at least 13 times.

Although racing has taken place at this track since 1970 in the form of Formula A, Indycar did not make its debut until 2007. Since that inaugural 2007 Indycar race at mid-Ohio, both Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing have been the dominant teams.

Chip Ganassi Racing teams have won eight of 17 races here while the Penske team has won it six times. Recently, however, Penske drivers have won the Mid-Ohio in three of the past four years, including two straight. Meanwhile, a Ganassi driver has not won there since 2019.
