Alpine reveal 2023 F1 car launch date

Alpine have set February 16, 2023 as the date to launch their 2023 Formula 1 car, the A523 with which the team will contest the upcoming F1 season.

Alpine became the fourth team to set a date of reveal for their 2023 F1 machine, the others being Aston Martin, Ferrari, and AlphaTauri.

The team will enter the new season with a revised driver lineup, as Pierre Gasly replaces Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard jumping ship to Aston Martin, making for an all French drivers lineup at Enstone with the second driver being Esteban Ocon.

Alpine finished the 2022 F1 season fourth in the Constructors’ Standings after beating McLaren in a season-long fight for that position.

The team suffered from reliability problems, especially on Fernando Alonso’s car over the season, the double F1 Champion falling prey to technical problems on his A522 six times over the course of the 2022 campaign, something he was never shy from criticizing.

Driver issues as well as reliability trouble

The Spaniard also leaves the team after tension with former teammate Esteban Ocon, the two infamously getting tangled up together at the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Alpine were also embroiled in driver controversy in the aftermath of Alonso’s defection to Aston Martin, as they were snubbed by their junior driver Oscar Piastri, who preferred to go to McLaren rather than accept Alpine’s promotion into a race seat in 2023 to replace Alonso.

What followed was an ignominious legal battle between Enstone and Woking for the the services of the young Australian, a battle the latter won, leaving Alpine management and boss Otmar Szafnauer with eggs on their faces.

It remains to be seen how Gasly and Ocon get along at the team in 2023, the pair historically known for not being the best of friends, and it would also be worth monitoring how the team sort out their reliability problems that marred their power unit in 2022.
