Ferrari were left to rue the minuscule gap between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen’s pole position winning lap time the 2022 Japanese Grand Prix, and hope the weather will be a factor in Sunday’s race.

A mere 0.010s was all it took for Verstappen to nip Leclerc to the top spot on the grid, for Round 18 of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship at Suzuka, setting themselves to challenge for victory and perhaps spoil the Dutchman’s and Honda’s mega-party planned for after the race.

Leclerc, who will start from second on the front row alongside the # Red Bull, reported after an intense session: “It’s a very tricky lap around here because whenever you are fast in the first sector, you lose out in the final sector, and I tried to find that balance in the last lap, but lost a little bit the tyres in the last sector and lost a little bit of time.

“It’s so close with everyone so that’s nice, and we’ll try to have a good race. Very limited amount of data going into the race, so that’s always a challenge. The feeling was good with the car. Let’s wait and see the conditions – it seems that there could be some rain in the race, so it should be fun.”

The Monegasque continued in the Ferrari team report: “It’s a very fast lap, but the more you push in the first sector, the slower you are in the last due to the tyres overheating. I think it will be an interesting race. It will be a challenge for everyone to make the right calls with unpredictable weather ahead.

“It’s always nice to be here and see so many people being passionate about this sport,” added Leclerc.

The Ferrari driver lies second in the 2022 F1 drivers’ standings, two ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, with five rounds remaining; meanwhile, Verstappen could be crowned World Champion should he win the race and claim the point for the fastest lap.
