Leclerc: Red Bull have found something this weekend

Charles Leclerc’s qualifying for the 2022 Belgian Grand Prix, like title leader and rival Max Verstappen, was overshadowed by the grid drop he will take for Sunday’s race.

Leclerc and Verstappen will share row eight, the Ferrari driver lining up 16th with the Red Bull just ahead in 15th.

But the real news on the day was Veratappen’s devastating pace that left his rivals, including Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, in his dust; the reigning F1 World Champion six tenths faster than anyone around Spa0-Francorchamps on Saturday.

No surprise then that immediately after qualy, like Carlos, Charles was disturbed by the deficit to Verstappen: “There is some potential because we didn’t prepare for qualifying as much as we normally do, but when you see the gap to Max it’s a bit worrying.”

“They are extremely quick and that has been the case since the beginning of the weekend and we can’t quite explain why. We need to work. We’ll try our best, but they seem to have found something this weekend,” reckoned the Ferrari driver.

Charles: It wasn’t the most exciting qualifying on my side

“They are way too fast,  there is nothing we could have done,” lamented Leclerc, who trails Verstappen by 80 points ahead of Sunday’s 14th round of the 2022 F1 World Championship.

Later, in the Ferrari report, Leclerc added: “It wasn’t the most exciting qualifying on my side, given the penalty we will take tomorrow. There was a bit of potential to improve the driving or the car’s set-up – however, our target was not to find that last tenth today.

“Our competitors have been very fast since the start of the weekend, and looking at the gap we had to them today shows us that it will not be an easy race.

“I don’t have a clear objective for tomorrow; what I want is to maximize the result. Our race pace was quite good yesterday so hopefully, with a strong first stint and a lot of overtakes, we can come back quickly and fight at the front,” concluded Leclerc.
