The 2022 New York Formula E-Prix: Favorites & American Debutant

The Big Apple is in preparation for the return of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – the world’s first all-electric motorsport that will unfold on the streets of New York on July 16 and 17.

As the Red Hook Brooklyn street circuit hosts the fifth anniversary of the New York City (NYC) ePrix, race fans will be gifted with a scenic Manhattan skyline for the double-header race weekend. NYC serves as the 11th and 12th rounds of the 2021/22 Formula E schedule, with a mere two more race weekends remaining until the season is complete.

Prior to the New York City ePrix, the Marrakesh ePrix will take place on July 2 at the Circuit de Monaco. Following the NYC two-day event, Formula E will finalize their season at ExCeL London on July 30/31, and the final race of the year arrives in Seoul at the Seoul Street Circuit on August 13-14.

A National Debut for America-born Oliver Askew

The Brooklyn ePrix location will see the eleven teams compete as the season standings heat up with just a handful of races remaining. TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, Jaguar TCS Racing and Mercedes-EQ will be defending their Season 7 titles, but the main focus for local supporters will be on Oliver Askew.

Askew, 25, became the first-ever American-born Formula E driver, and he’ll be making his national debut in Brooklyn. The 2019 Indy Lights Champion used to compete in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and IMSA, but the weekend of July 16/17 will be memorable.

During the New York ePrix ticket sale announcement, Askew was a panellist during the SXSW festival and said: “Racing in New York City in my first season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is going to be a personal highlight.

“The racing in Formula E is intense, and the wheel-to-wheel racing makes it one of the most exciting motorsport series out there. Formula E is an incredible, unique experience for fans too, and I can’t wait to be part of what will be an unforgettable double-header race weekend in Brooklyn,” added Askew.

The Empire State launched legalized online sports betting in January 2022. The market has accepted NYC with open arms, as the state has evolved into one of the most dominant states for sports wagering revenue. The sports betting economy in New York has boomed, with citizens of the state wagering more than $6 billion worth of sports bets within its initial five months of legalization.

Sportsbooks such as FanDuel NY will offer new customers risk-free bets and some of the best promotional offers, and the New York ePrix will be no exception. However, as electronic motorsports is relatively new, finding the ideal driver to back on your betting ticket could be a challenge.

Despite sitting outside the top-10 Formula E driver standings in 12th position, Sam Bird is unquestionably one of the favorites to win this year’s NYC ePrix. The English-born driver is the only competitor to have lifted the Brooklyn circuit trophy on multiple occasions since the track’s introduction in 2017. Bird won both races in 2017 and the second race during the 2021 season.

Stoffel Vandoorne –who currently races under the Mercedes-EQ team – is leading the Formula E standings with 121. Although he hasn’t won the NYC ePrix during his career, he’s naturally a favorite heading into the event when considering his current form.

Slightly behind Vandoorne in the current standings is Jean-Eric Vergne, with 116 points. The Frenchman has been impressive during the 2021/22 season, and although he’s missed a 1st place finish by a whisker on multiple occasions, the NYC ePrix could be his for the taking.

Switzerland’s Edoardo Mortara occupies 3rd place with 114 points. One win for the ROKiT Venturi Racing driver would give the Swiss standout a serious chance of stealing the top spot.

Mitch Evans has been a late-season bloomer, and when considering his recent successes and finishes close to the top of the leaderboard, he’s a real contender to win the Brooklyn circuit.

Evans is in 4th place in the standings but is just twelve points behind Vandoorne. Should he finish in strong positions at the Jakarta and NYC ePrix races, he could undoubtedly close the gap for first place.ably one of the favorites to win this year’s NYC ePrix.
