Russell: We are on the podium, I didn’t expect that this year

George Russell was happy to celebrate his podium at the Belgian Grand Prix despite the rather unusual circumstances of just four laps being completed.

Russell put in an incredible performance during qualifying on Saturday to secure a P2 start and he bagged the first podium of his Formula 1 career on a bizarre Sunday at Spa-Francorchamps.

It was only last race when the 23-year-old secured his first points finish with Williams after a ninth-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and it might not be long until he is confirmed as Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at Mercedes.

While Russell has so often lacked a bit of luck at the crucial moment (the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix comes to mind) he perhaps had it on his side at Spa, describing his P2 finish as an “amazing result”.

“We don’t often get rewarded for a great qualifying but today we absolutely did,” he said.

“I want to say sorry to the fans, it’s a shame we didn’t get the race under way but from our side of things for me and the team, its an amazing result.

“There’s been so much hard work gone into this over the past few years and here we are on the podium, I didn’t expect that this year at all.”
